The Leo Cabell Plaque and Bench (Aspen Mountain)

At one time a memorial bench dedicated to Leo Cabell was on top of Aspen Mountain; a brass plaque was affixed to the seat of the bench.  Then that same plaque was affixed to the seatback of a new bench, and it was relocated to a spot near the Mountain Chalet.  Photos are below.

The service is open to the public and marks the one-year anniversary of his death. Memories, anecdotes and photos submitted no later than Thursday, Aug. 3, will be compiled for a memory book. Items may be sent to the Norlin Library Dean's Office, N210C, Campus Box 184, Boulder, CO 80309-0184. RSVP for the reception to (303) 492-7511 or e-mail elaine.fowler@colorado.edu. Cabell died on Aug. 12, 1999, following a swimming accident in the ocean while visiting close friends in Nova Scotia. Since his retirement from the University Libraries in 1990, the 74-year-old adventurer had enjoyed an active retirement of travel, hiking, skiing and scuba diving. He was a lover of the arts and a long-time member of the Colorado Mountain Club and First Presbyterian Church. Cabell is remembered not only as a book-lover and dedicated librarian, but also as a dapper, charming, and endearing individual. He received his master's degree in library science from Rutgers University in 1963 and held his first library job at Cornell University. He joined the CU-Boulder Libraries in 1966 and became associate director in 1976. Just prior to his death, Cabell established an endowment fund for the University Libraries. Contributions in his memory may be made to the Leo W. Cabell Endowment Fund with checks payable to the CU Foundation, P.O.
